Scene Case Study: Objects of My Disaffection. Spiral Jetty, the knife set, her guitar.

The scene referred to here, Spiral Jetty, Knife Set, Her Guitar (hereafter Spiral Jetty), depicts the protagonist, Rachel, dropping off her daughter Katie at her father's new home. It is the first time Rachel has visited the house, and the first night Katie will spend away from her mother. The scene explores a moment of rupture and disorientation through both environmental and emotional cues.

Rachel moves through the unfamiliar space, encountering familiar objects, a painting of the Spiral Jetty, a record player, that now exist within a context that no longer belongs to her. While Katie plays in an adjacent room, Rachel and her ex-partner speak quietly at a table in the living room. After the conversation, Rachel enters the kitchen and takes a knife set, calling out to Katie to say goodbye. They share a brief hug in the hallway.

Scene Case Study: Objects of My Disaffection: Dinner, Bath, Bed.

`Dinner, Bath, Bed' follows Rachel as she returns home alone after dropping her daughter at her father's house for the first time. Throughout the sequence, she moves through the kitchen, bathroom, and bedroom, recreating the habitual domestic routines of a typical evening spent caring for her child: preparing dinner, running a bath, and getting her to sleep.

Objects of My Disaffection: BBQ, Vaccum, Baby Doll - Scene Case Study

In this scene, Rachel is depicted in a heightened state of determination, frenetically packing up her house in preparation for an impending move. She drags a floor lamp from the interior and exits into the front yard, where a large red skip bin overflowing with discarded items occupies the driveway. Throughout the scene, she collects and hurls a series of objects, including an esky, a barbecue, and various children's toys and furniture, into the skip with escalating force. Donning red gumboots, she then climbs into the skip and vigorously jumps on the contents to compress them.

Amidst this physical exertion, the sound of a crying baby doll pierces the moment. Rachel searches through the heap, eventually retrieving the toy. Despite her attempts to switch it off, the sound persists. In a moment of intense frustration, she repeatedly smashes the doll against the side of the skip until the sound abruptly ceases. She stands still, momentarily satisfied by the exertion and its result.
