Ward of State20 MIN: DANCE NARRATIVE FILM: DIRECTOR
Ward of State is a dance film by acclaimed choreographer Claire Marshall, screen direction by Sarah-Jane Woulahan. Set in 1930’s Australia the narrative film tells the true story of a young child taken from her Mother and made a ward of the state, working in as a child labourer in the commercial laundry of a Catholic Convent. The dramatic drama is told entirely through dance, without dialogue. It chronicles the troubled relationship between the child and her Mother the entertainer – a cycle of abuse across generations. The story is based upon the life and family history of choreographer Claire Marshall – who delved deeply through archive research to reveal the story of the women in her life who came before her.
